Welcome to veganism plus
Hi and Welcome to Veganism Plus.
The term "vegan" was first introduced to the English vocabulary in 1944 when Donald Watson and his wife, Dorothy, became frustrated with the term "vegetarian" because it included the eating of dairy and eggs. They took the first three letters of the word vegetarian and the last two letters to get the word vegan. This was considered "the beginning and the end of a vegetarian". Other sources say the word was invented by Donald Watson and Elsie Shrigley.
Donald Watson, born in Cumbria, UK in 1910, co-founded the Vegan Society on 1st November 1944, so it has been around for a long time. Incidentally, 1st November is now celebrated annually as World Vegan Day.
Sadly, Donald Watson passed away on 16th November 2005. He had been a vegetarian for over 80 years and a vegan for over 60 years.
